Vol. 460 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Policy on Import Substitution.

Dan Wallace

Question:

42 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his policy regarding the increase of import substitution. [1485/96]

As the Deputy may be aware, publicly-funded programmes to promote national products above those of other EU countries are contrary to the Treaty of the European Union. Instead, we must concentrate on maximising the selling opportunities for Irish industry in the domestic market. When these are created, the products stand or fall on the normal market criteria such as price and quality. Towards this end, ABT is involved in a variety of initiatives including Meet the Buyer events, the Look to Our Own campaign and the Market Opportunities in Ireland series of trade publications.
