Vol. 460 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Inner City Third Level Proposal.

Tony Gregory

Question:

64 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if she intends to implement the inner city third level access proposal presented to her Department in February 1995, by the Dublin Schools Business Partnership to assist the community which has the lowest third level participation rate according to the Higher Education Authority's most recent report. [1496/96]

In the context of promoting equality of access to higher education, an objective of the White Paper on Education is that each third level institution will be encouraged to develop links with designated disadvantaged second level schools, building upon existing good practice. The Steering Committee on the Future of Higher Education also addressed the issue of improved participation of the socially and economically disadvantaged groups in third level education.

The proposal from the Dublin Schools' Business Partnership is at present being considered in my Department in the context of implementation of the White Paper proposals in the area of equality of access to third level education and decisions to be taken on the report of the Steering Committee on the Future of Higher Education.
