Vol. 460 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Women's Prison.

Ivor Callely

Question:

63 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the number of prison places in the D wing of Mountjoy Women's Prison that were not used in 1995; the total prison places in Mountjoy Women's Prison; the number of places available for use in 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1622/96]

Female prisoners committed to Mountjoy Prison are currently accommodated on two landings of what used to be the `D' wing of St. Patrick's Institution. There is a total of 43 one-person cells available on these landings which are all equipped with in-cell sanitation. The top landing of that wing was taken out of use last year during the very hot summer weather in order to improve ventilation. At present a review of all prison accommodation for both male and female prisoners is in progress and the situation in this wing will come up for consideration in the review. During 1995 the average number of women in custody in Mountjoy Prison was 33.
