Vol. 461 No. 4

Written Answers. - Equal Status Legislation.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

96 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform his views on the issue of women being full members of golf clubs; the proposals, if any, he has regarding legislation in this area in terms of equal status; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2937/96]

Ivor Callely

Question:

102 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if he will meet representatives of industry and invite submissions on the proposed equal status legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3172/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 96 and 102 together.

Full membership of golf clubs should be available without discrimination on grounds of gender.

I intend to bring forward an equal status Bill which will deal with discrimination in non-employment areas on the grounds of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race, colour, nationality, national or ethnic origin and membership of the travelling community.

There has been considerable consultation on this proposed legislation and a discussion paper was circulated to 80 outside bodies in July 1993. Further discussions with representatives of industry will be arranged.
