Vol. 461 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pressure on Signing Reprocessing Agreements.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

137 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the diplomatic pressure, if any, put on countries that have signed or are contemplating signing reprocessing agreements with the THORP facility; the countries in question; and the pressure, if any, applied. [3277/96]

At the request of the ministerial committee on Sellafield and using expert material supplied by my Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs made formal, high-level diplomatic approaches last year to the countries which signed, or were contemplating signing, reprocessing agreements with the THORP facility, outlining the concern of the Government in this area. The countries in question were Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The Government will continue to make known its concern and opposition to the operations at THORP through diplomatic channels.
