Vol. 461 No. 5

Written Answers. - Visitor's Visa Extension.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

116 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice the procedures, if any, to be followed where a person has a three months visitor's visa and who for good personal reasons needs to have it extended; the criteria under which these extensions are considered; the timetable involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3266/96]

A person who seeks an extension to a visitor's visa — strictly speaking, an extension of permission to remain in the State — in circumstances as outlined by the Deputy may apply at his or her nearest Garda district office or if in Dublin, at the Aliens Registration Office, Harcourt Square, Dublin2.

Every such application is given careful and detailed consideration on its merits, but I would say that, save on very pressing humanitarian grounds, such as those involving caring for a sick relative, the normal practice is to refuse such requests on the grounds that permission to visit the State for a period of up to three months is sufficient for holiday and related short-stay purposes.

For the avoidance of confusion, I would point out that there can be no question of granting extensions in circumstances which involve a change in the persons's status from that of a visitor to, for example, a student, or a worker. Such applications, involving a change in the applicant's status may only be made by that person while outside the State and at an Irish Embassy or consular post.
