Vol. 461 No. 6

Written Answers. - Westmeath School's Closure.

Chris Flood

Question:

115 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to close St. Feichin's national school, Fore, County Westmeath; the further plans, if any, she has to amalgamate this school with St. Mary's national school, Collinstown, County Westmeath; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3488/96]

In view of the significant projected decline in enrolments for both St. Feichin's national school, Fore, and St. Mary's national school, Collinstown, my Department proposed the amalgamation of both schools and asked that the matter be considered locally.

The response was that the board of management and parents of St. Feichin's are opposed to an amalgamation of the schools. In the circumstances, my Department will not be pursuing the question of amalgamation for the present. It may be considered again in the future if the projected enrolment decline in both schools materialises.
