Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - Irish Steel Redundancy Payments.

Máirín Quill

Question:

266 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment when redundancy payments due to former employees of Irish Steel will be paid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3601/96]

There are no outstanding redundancy payments due to former employees of Irish Steel Ltd. All employees made redundant by Irish Steel Ltd. received their redundancy payments in full on leaving the company.

The Deputy may have in mind the question of readaptation aid from the EU for former Irish Steel employees, under Article 56 (2) (b) of the ECSC Treaty. My Department has received recently a communication from the EU Commission in Brussels confirming that the Commission has approved grant aid amounting to ECU 376,806 for the 194 workers who were made redundant in 1994-95. A number of aspects of the Commission's decision, and the conditions attached to the decision, have to be clarified by my Department before any payment can be made by the EU Commission. My Department is in touch with the Commission and I hope that all matters will be clarified shortly.
