Vol. 461 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Psychological Service.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

96 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to develop the school psychological service at primary level in 1996 in view of the fact that the appointments scheduled for 1995 have been affected by the public service embargo; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1807/96]

During last year, 1995, ten additional psychologists were recruited by my Department in order to improve access to psychological services in schools. These psychologists were assigned to work in primary schools, priority being given to schools serving disadvantaged areas. These were the number of posts it was possible to fill in 1995, taking account of the resources available.

In accordance with Government policy set out in the White Paper on Education, and in A Government of Renewal, I propose to continue the development of the psychological service as resources become available to my Department for that purpose.

Decisions on recruitment of staff to my Department in 1996 will be made in accord with Government policy on public sector employment and will be subject to the financial limits of my Department's administrative budget.
