Question:

119 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prisoners released from all prisons during 1995; the number of temporary release for Christmas 1995; the number of prisoners released from each specific prison on temporary release for Christmas 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3952/96]

The throughout of prisoners in 1995 was approximately 9,900. This number includes all types of committal i.e. on remand, for trial and on conviction. The breakdown of this figure between the various forms of disposition, for example, brought up on remand and not re-committed by the courts, released on bail, on remission, on full temporary release, is not yet available. It would require the manual checking of almost 10,000 files and the collation of that information and the staff time required could not be justified.

The number of temporary releases granted at Christmas 1995 in each institution was as follows:
