Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drug-Related Sentences.

Chris Flood

Question:

14 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Justice the range of sentences imposed on persons convicted on indictment of possession of controlled drugs for the purpose of sale or supply contrary to section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977 and 1984, in the years 1994 and 1995. [3826/96]

From prison records I am aware that in 1993, the latest year for which statistics are available, 71 persons were given a custodial sentence for possession of drugs with intent to supply. These statistics do not indicate, however, if a fine was imposed in addition to the custodial sentence. The sentences imposed were as follows: three sentences of less than three months, six sentences of three to six months, 20 sentences of six months to one year, 29 sentences of one to two years, four sentences of two to three years, five sentences of three to five years, three sentences of five to ten years and one sentence of ten years or more.

Statistics of custodial sentences for 1994 and 1995 will be compiled from prison records and will be available later this year.

Court statistics do not record details of sentences imposed by the courts.
