Vol. 461 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cash Transport Security Arrangements.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

60 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice the reviews which were promised in relation to the adequacy of security arrangements relating to the escorting and storage of large cash deposits and specifically the outcome of the review carried out by her Department in this matter following the Brinks Allied raid in 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3906/96]

The Garda Síochána carried out a review of security measures provided when escorting large quantities of cash. Certain modifications in procedures were made but it would not be appropriate for me to outline them. It should be noted that total responsibility for storage of money inside a security firm's premises rests with the security company. The Garda Síochána have always been willing to give any advice to security firms as required.

The Garda Síochána are engaged in an ongoing review of cash movements and are involved in consultations with companies that provide a collection-delivery and cash holding service.

Following the robbery at the Brinks Allied premises last year, I requested officials in my Department to carry out a review of the issues involved in the possible statutory regulation of the private security industry and to report to me whether regulation might be reasonably expected to reduce the possibility of further such robberies at commercial premises and, in general, result in an improved service to the public.

The review is nearing completion and I will appraise the Deputy of the conclusions of the review when it is completed.
