Vol. 462 No. 1

Written Answers. - Land Acquisition Compensation.

John Ellis

Question:

73 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the number of unsettled claims still outstanding following land acquisition as part of the Shannon/Erne waterway construction programme; when these cases will be settled; and the names of those involved. [4082/96]

A total of 349 claims have been received to date for compensation for land acquired in connection with the restoration of the Shannon Erne Waterway. A total of 319 of these claims have been settled while the remaining 30 claims are being processed in consultation with the claimants or their representatives. In addition, a small number of unquantified notices of intention to claim have been received. In these cases the definitive claims will be processed as quickly as possible once they are received.

There is provision in the Shannon Navigation Act to allow claimants who so wish to have their claims determined by arbitration. The names of the claimants are confidential between them and the Waterways Service. It would be a breach of that confidentiality to reveal their names and I regret that I am not in a position to provide the information requested by the Deputy in that regard.
