Vol. 462 No. 1

Written Answers. - Anonymous Letters.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

71 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Health the standard procedures operated when his Office or the Office of the Minister(s) of State at his Department receives an anonymous letter; and if he has satisfied himself with the procedures that currently operate. [4100/96]

Limerick East): The procedures for the treatment of anomymous correspondence received in my office or those of the Ministers of State at my Department are that any such correspondence which appears frivolous or which does not contain sufficient information to allow it to be taken further is not followed up. However, correspondence which contains specific information or allegations is referred to the appropriate section in the Department for any action which they may deem necessary.

I am satified that the procedures operated in respect of anomymous correspondence are appropriate.

Question:

72 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the standard procedures operated when his office or the office of the Minister(s) of State at his Department receives an anonymous letter; and if he has satisfied himself with the procedures that currently operate. [4101/96]

There is no standard procedure for dealing with anonymous letters. All signed letters received in my office are, of course, acknowledged and as appropriate, acted upon.

There is no Minister of State in my Department.
