Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Taxation of Motor Vehicle.

John Ellis

Question:

133 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment the position in the case of a person in County Leitrim who sought to tax his motor vehicle with the Taxation Office but was refused in view of the fact that he held insurance with an English company (details supplied) which operates in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4887/96]

I am aware of a case dealt with by Leitrim Motor Taxation Office which may be the one referred to. When licensing a vehicle, the Motor Taxation Office is required to check that insurance clearly applicable to the stated use of the vehicle is in force and is fully effective in providing all the usual entitlements to innocent victims of accidents. The certificate of insurance presented in the case in question did not comply with either the Road Traffic Act requirements or the insurance regulations administered by the Minister for Enterprise and Employment and was, therefore, not acceptable.
