Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Border Crossings.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

134 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the number of Border crossings that have been reopened since the original IRA ceasefire of 31 August 1994; the crossings that remain to be reopened; and the time-scale for the opening of the closed crossings. [4898/96]

As of 31 December 1995, on the southern side of the Border, a total of 108 of the 113 Border crossings on public roads which had been closed had been reopened. Grants of £220,000 have been allocated in 1996 to complete the re-opening of non-national cross-Border roads. Donegal County Council plans to complete the re-opening of the one remaining Border crossing in the county by 31 May 1996. Monaghan County Council plans to have works completed on the roads serving the three remaining crossings in the county by 30 April 1996; full reopening of these Border crossings is dependent on the completion of bridge works by the Northern Ireland authorities.

The National Roads Authority has allocated a grant of £2.5 million in 1996 to Cavan County Council for the Aghalane Bridge project and expects the main contract to commence in the last quarter of this year. It is anticipated that the bridge will be open to traffic in later 1997.
