Vol. 462 No. 5

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Art Examination.

Micheál Martin

Question:

169 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the date on which Price Waterhouse was asked to investigate the major error discovered in the operation of the 1995 leaving certificate art examination; and the terms of reference given to that company. [4844/96]

I decided on 14 December that the operation of the 1995 leaving certificate art examination should be the subject of an independent inquiry. My Department gave effect to this decision by initiating a range of contacts including contacts of a preliminary nature with Price Waterhouse. The inquiry commenced immediately subsequent to a meeting on 15 January between officials of my Department and Price Waterhouse.

The terms of reference given to Price Waterhouse are as follows:

To investigate the reasons for the various operational failures in relation to the 1995 leaving certificate art examination and to make recommendations to prevent recurrences of same. To make any other appropriate recommendations.
