Question:

245 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the current position regarding plans for a competitive scheme to secure one electricity generating plant of up to 30 megawatts using biomass or waste as a fuel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4990/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 59, 62, 244 and 245 together.

The competitive scheme to secure an electricity generating plant of up to 30 megawatts using biomass or waste as a fuel was launched on 21 December 1995. A grant of up to £7.5 million has been made available for this initiative.

The expression of interest stage for applicants closed on 29 February and tender packs are being issued to applicants from the Power Procurer's Office, Merrion Square, this week. The deadline for formal submission of a technical application is 30 April 1996.

The review of strategy in relation to renewable energy resources is nearing completion and I expect to be in a position to announce my proposals soon.
