Written Answers. - CIE Finances.

Dan Wallace

Question:

63 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the total amount of financial assistance provided to CIE during 1995; and if he will give a breakdown of this total into the major cost centres. [4960/96]

Ivor Callely

Question:

249 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the financial position of CIE on 31 December 1995; the consideration, if any, given to this position; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4997/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 63 and 249 together.

Exchequer grants paid to CIE in 1995 amounted to £102.5 million. The allocation of these grants is a matter for the board of CIE. In 1995 the board allocated the grants as follows: Iarnród Éireann, £89.163 million; Bus Átha Cliath, £3.8 million; Bus Éireann, £1.7 million and Howth/Bray, DART interest charges, £7.837 million.

A separate payment of £35,000 was made to CIE in respect of compensation paid by the board for redundancies which arose in the period July 1958 to March 1964. This payment is provided for under the terms of the Transport Act, 1958.

It would not be appropriate for me to comment on specific aspects of CIE's financial performance for 1995 in advance of the publication of the group's annual report which is not due until later this year.
