Vol. 462 No. 6

Written Answers. - Surplus Military Property.

Ivor Callely

Question:

20 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the buildings, if any, that have been identified as surplus or under-utilised; the discussions, or considerations, if any, that have been given to these buildings in view of previous parliamentary questions asked on the subject by Deputy Mr. Callely; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5064/96]

As I informed the Deputy in response to a similar question which he tabled in this regard in November last, military property outside of barracks which is surplus to requirements and which is not required for other State purposes is offered for sale.

Buildings within barracks which become surplus to requirements are converted for other military uses where appropriate.
This matter is kept under continual review in order to maintain security and operational efficiency. In this connection the Government has recently approved the adaptation of the military detention barracks at the Curragh for use as a civil prison.
