Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - College Accommodation Charge.

Noel Treacy

Question:

94 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education the reason a £40 per week accommodation charge is imposed by her Department on students attending St. Patrick's Teacher Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin 9; if this charge will be waived in view of third level fees initiative which she has taken; the reason for the introduction of the charge; if she will ensure that this is abolished as it is causing serious hardship to students and their parents; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5348/96]

My Department does not impose an accommodation charge of £40 per week on students attending the college in question. I understand from the Higher Education Authority that the students who live in the college during term pay rent for their accommodation to the college. I understand that the current rent is £29 per week.

There is no case for waiving this charge as part of the third level fees initiative. The third level initiative is concerned with tuition fees. Students who satisfy the means test and other requirements under the student support schemes are eligible for maintenance grants.
