Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Special Educational Placement.

Tony Gregory

Question:

95 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the assistance, if any, she can give for the provision of a place in a special school for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 10 in view of the fact that he has been out of school since December 1995, where he was very disruptive and the school could not cope with him. [5371/96]

Special schools cater for the educational needs of children who have been assessed as having a mental handicap, physical handicap or are emotionally disturbed. I understand that the health authorities have been asked to provide an up-to-date assessment for the child in question, in order to determine whether a special school is the most appropriate educational placement.

I can assure the Deputy that once my Department receives this assessment, a suitable educational placement will be pursued as a matter of urgency.
