Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Achill (Mayo) Pier.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

121 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Marine the lessons, if any, he has learnt from the community involvement with the support of State agencies in the modernisation of the pier at Cé Beag, Cloughmore, Achill, County Mayo; whether these experiences can be replicated for similar type projects; the support, if any, his Department is prepared to give to actively encourage this approach; whether his Department will support the plans of the local community for the improvement of the pier at Bunnacurry, Achill, County Mayo, along the same lines in view of the small amount of money available for improvements to piers and harbours. [5377/96]

The Department, in its role of providing engineering and technical advice to local authorities on local pier improvement projects, is fully supportive of community involvement in such projects including the utilisation of relevant schemes where this is practicable and feasible.
