Vol. 462 No. 7

Written Answers. - Seal Cull Studies.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

122 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Marine the studies, if any, that are taking place to ascertain whether there is a necessity for a seal cull in view of the experience of fishermen and others living in coastal communities which suggest that there is a massive increase in the number of seals and the consequent damage caused by them; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5378/96]

As I advised on 13 February last, a three year (1995-98) scientific study on the comparative distribution and migration patterns of grey and common seals in Irish waters which is currently under way.

The project, which is jointly funded by the Department, BIM and the Wildlife Service, will provide key data on seal population levels and migratory patterns. The results will enable us to quantify and assess more accurately possible impacts of seal populations on fish stocks around the Irish coast and will inform any future decisions on seal population management.
