Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Youth Officer Appointment.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

176 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Education if he will ensure that a permanent youth officer is appointed to the youth services of a district (details supplied) in Dublin north east in view of the large number of young people availing of the service and the non-existence of support by State agencies for youth services in that district. [5576/96]

The allocation of grant aid for youth services in 1996 is currently under consideration and applications for funding are currently being processed by the youth affairs section of my Department. An application has been received in respect of the youth service referred to and will be considered in the light of existing commitments and the overall budget available for youth services in 1996.

However, my Department, through Comhairle le Leas Oige — the youth work sub-committee of the City of Dublin vocational education committee — provided £10,000 to this youth service in 1995 for the employment of a part-time youth worker and the development of a programme for young people in the area. This service also received an additional once-off grant of £4,644 for the improvement of their premises in 1995.
