Vol. 462 No. 8

Written Answers. - Trust Fund for LEP Sufferers.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

83 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Health if he will give recognition to the special circumstances of the requests of sufferers of post polio syndrome; if he will support the establishment of a fund to provide assistance to sufferers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5810/96]

Róisín Shortall

Question:

97 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the syndrome of the late effects of polio, LEP; and if he will consider making special arrangements, such as a trust fund to allocate financial assistance to sufferers on the basis of proven need. [5516/96]

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 83 and 97 together. I am aware of the existence of the condition referred to as the “late effects of polio” (LEP) or post polio syndrome which has been reported among people who suffered in the past from acute poliomyelitis.

LEP sufferers are entitled to apply for assistance under a wide range of schemes which are available to all people with disabilities and I do not consider it necessary to make special arrangements for LEP sufferers.
