Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Service.

Ivor Callely

Question:

95 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the number of schools that have applied for the appointment of a remedial teacher in Dublin 1, 3, 5 and 9; the schools that have been approved for an individual or shared basis: and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6785/96]

Of the 71 ordinary national schools in the areas in question, 62 already have a remedial teacher service, either on a full-time or shared basis; 12 national schools have applied to my Department for sanction to appoint a remedial teacher either on a full-time or a shared basis. Eight of these schools already have some access to a remedial teacher but have sought an improved level of service. The remaining four schools currently have no service.

None of the 12 schools referred to has received approval in respect of their applications. I am not in a position at present to make remedial teacher posts available to the primary school sector.
When I am in a position to extend the remediation service, all schools who have applied for a remedial teaching post will be given every consideration.
