Vol. 463 No. 8

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

126 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to expand the disadvantaged areas scheme and in particular the need for Scoil Clochar Mhuire, Dundalk, County Louth, to be included in this scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7520/96]

I have no plans at present to expand the disadvantaged areas scheme.

A detailed report by the Combat Poverty Agency on current approaches to the identification and support of pupils in disadvantaged areas, is currently being considered in my Department.
This report will provide a valuable basis for the development of future approaches to the identification and support of pupils suffering educational disadvantage.
The needs of the school mentioned by the Deputy will be considered in the context of any future expansion of the scheme which may be undertaken.
