Vol. 463 No. 8

Written Answers. - Neglect of Horses.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

171 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will give a commitment that the control of horses legislation will receive the utmost priority within the Government programme in view of the disturbing and distressing situation regarding neglect of horses (details supplied) in parts of Dublin; and if he will provide additional financial assistance to the DSPCA to help address the current crisis of neglect. [7495/96]

It is my intention to ensure that the proposed Bill, the drafting of which is nearing completion, will receive the utmost priority within the Government programme.

I made a grant of £50,000 to the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals last year to meet their immediate needs. I regret that there are no funds at my disposal to provide further financial assistance to the society.
