Vol. 464 No. 2

Written Answers. - Discussions with EU President.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

116 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the outcome of recent personal discussions in Brussels with the President of the European Commission, Mr. Jacques Santer, on the question of the fines and disallowances proposed to be imposed on Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4535/96]

I did not have any personal discussions with President Santer on the question of the disallowances proposed for Ireland. The Taoiseach had discussions with President Santer on a number of occasions and I am satisfied that these discussions, and the communications from other Government colleagues and myself, contributed to the decision by the Commission that the disallowances should be reduced by £24 million by comparison with what was proposed by the Commission Services.
