Vol. 464 No. 2

Written Answers. - Beef Tribunal Recommendations.

Ivor Callely

Question:

120 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total number of recommendations contained in the report of the Tribunal of Inquiry into the Beef Processing Industry; the number of recommendations not acted upon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7589/96]

The Government is committed to implementing all the recommendations of the tribunal and in particular those referring to agriculture in chapter 25 of the report. The tribunal recognised the controls improvements already put in place by the Department (pages 704 to 712). In particular it indicated that the control systems introduced by the Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry "go very far towards dealing with the weaknesses in the system disclosed during the course of the tribunal and have rendered unnecessary many of the recommendations which might otherwise have been made by the Tribunal". The tribunal confined itself to two specific recommendations relating to intervention purchasing and aids for private storage, or APS. Arrangements have been made to ensure that the recommendations are fully implemented. It is my intention that all of the tribunal's recommendations will be rigorously enforced.
