Vol. 464 No. 2

Written Answers. - Soft Fruit Development.

James Leonard

Question:

121 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the proposals, if any, he has for the development of soft fruits in view of the demand for these products. [6927/96]

The area under soft fruit production increased by 22 per cent and the value of the output increased by over 28 per cent between 1992 and 1995.

Technology developments have extended the season for soft fruit in recent years. During the season the amount produced exceeds domestic demands and a large increase in production cannot be accommodated readily on the home market. Exports to the UK have increased in recent years and progress continues to be made by the trade in identifying further outlets.

Teagasc research continues to target the development of technologies which enable the season to be extended further.

Specialised equipment, required for the production, harvesting and handling of soft fruit, has been grant-aided under the Operational Programme for Rural Development 1991-93 and the Perifra Programme, 1992 and continues to qualify for grant aid under the Operational Programme for Agriculture. Rural Development and Forestry 1994-99. In addition cane fruit planting now qualifies for aid under the farm improvement programme for horticulture.

Funds are also provided under the FEOGA Marketing and processing scheme to encourage investments in added value products.
