Question:

147 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications whether he has completed the review of strategy regarding renewable energy resources; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8125/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 31, 34 and 147 together.

In March 1995, I announced the results of the alternative energy requirement scheme, the Government's first major alternative energy support initiative. Under this scheme contracts were awarded to independent producers for the generation and sale of 89MW of electricity, to be produced from renewables, and a further 22 MW from combined heat and power systems. Ten wind energy projects were awarded contracts with a combined total of 73MW and these projects are currently at various stages of the planning process.

Arising from the AER1, and conscious of the need to develop a long-term renewable energy strategy, I initiated an indepth review of renewable energy policy. I am happy to confirm that this process is now complete and that Government approval for the broad policy parameters has been secured.

My strategy statement arising from the review is currently being finalised and I will announce full details on Friday, 26 April. I will also furnish copies of my statement to the Oireachtas Library.
