Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

26 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Defence the role of the Defence Forces on Border duty; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8212/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 26 together.

The role of the Defence Forces in the Border area is to aid the civil power which, in practice, means to assist the Garda Síochána at roadblocks, checkpoints and searches. Military personnel also assist the Garda in patrolling the road network around the border area. In addition an Air Corps helicopter and aircraft which provide aerial support, assistance and reconnaissance are stationed in border areas.
A bomb disposal team and specialised search teams are also stationed in the Border areas where they can provide a quick response in connection with bomb threats or the need for systematic searching of specific locations.
The Defence Forces' ongoing commitment to Border security is kept under constant review and resources are adjusted as circumstances warrant.
