Vol. 464 No. 4

Written Answers. - Compensation Claims.

Michael Bell

Question:

20 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of claims for compensation submitted to his Department on behalf of serving members of the PDF FCA/Slua Mhuirí, and Civil Defence by unit; the number of claims submitted from former members of the same units; the cost of any such claims already conceded; the expected balance of such claims that will be dealt with; the estimated cost of these claims; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5234/96]

As the statistical data concerning the number of claims is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it in the Official Report.

The cost of compensation paid from the Vote for Defence is recorded in the Appropriation Accounts. Expenditure in 1995 was £6.144 million.

There are approximately 3,600 personal injury claims outstanding. It is not possible at this stage to estimate the total cost of these claims.
