Vol. 464 No. 4

Written Answers. - Implementation of Legislation.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

21 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Defence whether the provisions of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989, have been fully implemented by the Defence Forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8219/96]

The provisions of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 in so far as they apply to the Defence Forces have been implemented fully.

Since September 1990 a defence advisory committee, comprising both military and civilian personnel, monitored and directed a programme to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the provisions of the legislation.
Safety statements and safety representatives are now in place at unit level and 63 safety standards providing detailed technical safety guidelines on a wide range of general and specifically military activities have been completed and issued.
Considerable resources have been made available for an on-going programme of safety training.
