Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Castletownbere (Cork) Community School.

Joe Walsh

Question:

149 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to have urgent repairs carried out to the physical education hall at Castletownbere Community School, County Cork; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9258/96]

There is no record of an application in my Department's building unit from the board of management of Beara Community School, Castletownbere, County Cork for repairs to the physical education hall at the school.

However, an application has been received in the sports section of my Department from Beara Sports Committee for grant aid towards the cost of replacing the roof on Beara sports hall under my Department's recreational facilities scheme.

The position in relation to school sports facilities is that, in general, school projects are not eligible for national lottery funding under either the major sports capital programme or the recreational facilities scheme. However, a limited number of school sports facilities have been assisted under the schemes where the project is being undertaken by a local community group in co-operation with a school. One of the conditions attaching to the scheme is that the completed facility must be available to all sections of the community.

This application will be considered under the terms of these schemes, subject to the funds available, when decisions are being made on future grant allocations.
