Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Detention of Person in Northern Ireland.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

42 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the result of his representations regarding the case of a person (details supplied) in County Louth currently being detained in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9091/96]

I am aware of the case referred to by the Deputy. I instructed my officials to make inquiries in the matter through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat. The British authorities have confirmed that the individual is currently on remand and that a date has yet to be set for his trial. He is, at present, legally required to appear in court every 28 days pending arraignment. I can assure the Deputy that this case will be kept under review.
