110 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the approvals his Department has sanctioned in respect of the augmentation of the existing water supply to Westport town, County Mayo; the other approvals, if any, that have to be obtained from his Department, prior to summer, 1997 before actual work commences in providing extra water; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 111 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment whether his Department will approve expenditure to provide additional reservoir capacity for Westport town, County Mayo in view of the fact that the existing reservoir is inadequate, particularly in times of breakdown or disruption; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 113 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment if he will furnish Deputy Seamus Hughes with the extract contained in a report promised in a reply to a parliamentary question on 23 April 1996 as a matter of urgency. [9168/96]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 110, 111 and 113 together.
I have approved Mayo County Council's proposal to construct a large diameter watermain and associated pumping stations and break pressure tank at an estimated cost of £2.25 million. The council is, at present, drawing up detailed contract documents in respect of these works; these documents must, in turn, be submitted for my Department's approval. Thereafter, it will be necessary to seek my Department's approval in respect of the council's proposals for the carrying out of the works whether by way of contract or direct labour. Submissions from the council for these necessary approvals will be dealt with urgently.
On completion of the Castlebar-Westport link, and the proposed break pressure tank at Sheeaune, the resultant dual supply will obviate the need for a substantial increase in water storage capacity at this stage.
