Vol. 465 No. 2

Written Answers. - Use of Mobile Phones.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

139 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Defence the procedures in place within his Department for monitoring the use of mobile phones by unestablished staff for purposes which are personal to the authorised user; the plans, if any, he has for improvements in this respect; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9400/96]

At present there is only one mobile phone issued by the Department to an unestablished staff member. Monthly bills, which include detailed call records, are received for this phone by the management services branch. Having been recorded by management services branch the bills are subject to certification that all call charges were incurred on official business. Bills are then forwarded to finance branch in Renmore for payment and, if necessary, recovery action in respect of personal use. This procedure works well and I have no plans to change it.
