Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport Scheme.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

146 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, that has been made on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Donegal in respect of the rerouting of the school bus from Cashelard, Ballyshannon to Creevy national school, Ballyshannon, County Donegal. [9463/96]

As a rule, primary school transport routes are planned so that, as far as possible, no eligible child will have more than 1.5 miles to travel to a pick-up point. Pupils living off the main route of a service are generally expected to make their own way, or to be brought to convenient pick-up points along the main route of service.

The pupil in question resides 0.6 miles from the route of the existing bus service to Creevy national school. This is considered to be a good level of service in the overall context of the school transport scheme.

As extra costs would be incurred, it would not be open to my Department to reroute the service as requested.
