Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Attendance.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

153 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the plight of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 who has not attended school since May 1995; the plans, if any, she has to accommodate this person; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9532/96]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers.

My Department's primary inspectorate is in ongoing contact with the health authorities in order to ensure that suitable accommodation and educational supports can be put in place for the child in question.

At a case conference in November 1995, the health authorities undertook to provide a residential placement for this child early in 1996. I understand that the child has since been in residential care on a one-week-in-three basis and that, during this period, he is provided with an education service through a teacher supplied by my Department.
The question of arranging a full-time residential placement is a matter for the relevant health authority. My Department is currently seeking to establish whether such a placement is being arranged for the child in question.
In the event of such a placement being arranged, my Department will ensure that the necessary education service is made available at that location.
In the meantime, my Department is pursuing the possibility of arranging a home tuition service for the child.
