Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Schemes for Summer Schools.

Ivor Callely

Question:

177 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the special schemes that operate in respect of the Irish language summer schools; the total number and value of places available; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9723/96]

My Department operates a scheme of capitation grants to summer colleges providing courses in Irish. These colleges provide courses mainly for young people between the ages of 10 and 18 in the Gaeltacht or between 8 and 18 in residential colleges outside the Gaeltacht. There are 71 approved colleges to date. Grants of £23 per pupil on average were paid to the colleges in respect of 24,000 pupils in the school year 1994-95.
