Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rent Subsidies Payments.

Joe Walsh

Question:

204 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare the current position regarding his review of the payment of rent subsidies under the supplementary welfare allowance scheme to persons evicted from local authority houses as a result of anti-social behaviour. [9641/96]

The payment of rent supplements to tenants evicted from local authority housing as a result of anti-social behaviour is under review. As the Deputy will be aware, the withdrawal of social welfare payments has legal and social implications.

In view of the serious issues involved in this complex matter and the policy implications in terms of families and dependants, I have referred the matter to my Department's legal adviser to be examined in depth.
