Vol. 465 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drug Problem.

Ivor Callely

Question:

143 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, that has been made by the multi-disciplinary approach and other actions to address the escalating problems associated with drug misuse; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9853/96]

The Government recognises that the drugs problem is multi-faceted, requiring a response from a number of Departments and agencies. In this regard, the Deputy will be aware that last year the Government approved a series of organisational, financial, legislative and operational measures to deal with the drugs problem. A further series of measures — concerning education, prevention and treatment issues — was agreed by the Government in February.

It would be difficult, in the context of an answer to a parliamentary question, to set out in detail the progress made on an item-by-item basis on the implementation by all the Departments and agencies concerned of all the measures in question, but the Deputy may be assured that significant progress has already been made and will continue to be made.
