Vol. 465 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Places.

Ivor Callely

Question:

144 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, made on the study being undertaken to determine the effect on the demand for prison places if there was a change in the bail laws; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9854/96]

Any indication of the effect on demand for prison places if there were to be changes in the bail laws would, of course, depend on the precise nature of these changes and, accordingly, would have to await the finalisation of proposals for change in our bail laws. In devising proposals in this area I have had full regard to assessments of the likely implications of possible changes in the law in this area for prison accommodation requirements.
