Vol. 465 No. 6

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

176 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education if she will have a remedial teacher appointed to schools (details supplied) in County Meath. [10042/96]

Mary Harney

Question:

177 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education the reason Scoil Chaitlín Maude in Tallaght, Dublin 24, the fourth largest school in a disadvantaged area, is currently without the services of a remedial teacher; the plans, if any, she has to appoint a remedial teacher as a matter of urgency; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10069/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 176 and 177 together.

I am not in a position at present to make remedial teacher posts available to the schools mentioned by the Deputies.

Remedial teacher posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need as assessed by my Department's primary Inspectorate having regard to data submitted by the schools and subject to available resources.

I will continue to review needs in this area and consider how best these needs can be addressed within available resources. When I am in a position to extend the remediation service, the needs of the schools referred to by the Deputies will receive every consideration.
