196 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the provisions that will be made available to national school teachers in respect of inservice training in music in view of the proven importance to a child's development of this subject; and if she will make a statement on the matter. As part of the revision of the primary curriculum a national programme of inservice will be provided by my Department.
In preparation for this week and to increase the panel of available trainers in music the in-career development unit of my Department has completed a training of trainers course in music. Twenty one teachers have been trained from throughout the country to facilitate inservice music courses.
My Department has and will continue to approve suitable music course applications from education centres, individual schools and groups of teachers. In addition, 33 music courses have been approved for primary teachers as part of the 1996 summer course programme.
