Vol. 465 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rathcoole (Dublin) Garda District.

Mary Harney

Question:

224 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice if the Rathcoole Garda area can be incorporated into the Dublin Metropolitian Area instead of the Carlow-Kildare Division which is administratively untenable; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10075/96]

The allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities.

The Rathcoole sub-district includes the villages of Saggart, Brittas and Newcastle as well as Rathcoole. I understand that the Garda authorities are satisfied that the incorporation of the Rathcoole area in its present division provides adequate and effective policing for the area. It is administered from the district headquarters at Naas, which is only eight miles away on the dual carriageway. They are not persuaded that the incorporation of the Rathcoole area into the DMA would offer any operational advantages and they do not, therefore, propose to take up the Deputy's suggestion.
