Vol. 465 No. 8

Written Answers. - Smear Test Fees.

Michael Bell

Question:

64 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Health if women requiring a smear test are required to pay a fee of £15; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10665/96]

Limerick East): The taking of a cervical smear is normally carried out by a general practitioner. Medical card holders are entitled to general practitioner services without charge. Non-medical card holders attend general practitioners as private patients. In this regard the fee charged by the general practitioner is a private matter between the parties concerned and neither my Department nor the health boards are in a position to intervene regarding this.

With regard to screening of cervical smears this service is provided free as an out-patient service under the Health Acts and no charge arises unless private consultant services are requested.
